The Concept

For most writers there are two main barriers once the manuscript is finished. Finding a publisher who will take the work is first.

Is the work good enough to merit a publisher picking it up? Who knows, until you send it out? You send it out to several publishers and it takes months and months to get a reply. You get many turndowns. The offers to publish come only from those publishers who want to charge you to print it. Then you may end up thinking your work isn’t worthy of print, which may not be the case at all.

Big Time Publishers look at the bottom line. If they can’t see how they can sell a minimum of 150,000 copies of the book they won’t take it. If my book sold 149,999 copies I would be ecstatic. How do you measure success?

If you measure it only by having a publisher pay you upfront for your work you greatly limit yourself. Of course, that would be ideal. But do you know how many writers are actually able to accomplish that? Very, very few.

Compare it to another area in the Arts, acting. There are the top level actors. They make top money. They attract huge audiences. They draw millions in box office. Not to mention merchandising. These are the Stephen Kings. But you go lower than that and you find supporting role actors, character actors, bit and piece actors with few lines, smaller actors with one or no lines, and so on.

You could say that similar levels exist in the world of books. What I am saying is just because you may be at the level of “bit and piece actor” doesn’t mean that your work isn’t worthy of being printed. It is, but it would attract a smaller audience.

If you were the author of five books and each book sold 5,000 copies that would be 25,000 copies total; not very much by industry standards.

But what if we told you that we could show you how you could earn $7 to $12 per copy? Now you are talking about $250,000 and suddenly we have your attention.

Would that be success?

There are thousands of actors in New York City alone that grind out a living the hard way in the business. They do lots of auditions. They do commercials. They put on chicken costumes, become fruit of the loom guys, and do whatever they need to do to earn money in their chosen field. For every star in the biz, there are thousands of lesser comets. That doesn’t make the comets less entertaining.

I mention this because there is a stigma attached to “Self Publishing” that says that if Mr. Big Time Publisher doesn’t pay you for your work upfront then your work is not worthy of print. I don’t buy that. And guess what? If you are one of the thousands of writers that submit manuscripts to publishers every month and you don’t get one to bite, your only alternative is to self-publish.

There is no shame in that. This means that the writer finances the project. Some of our greatest writers were self-published, especially early in their careers. Mark Twain, Thoreau, Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, James Redfield all published their own work, and there are many, many more.

Just because you can’t get a publisher to pay you upfront does not mean that your work isn’t worthy. It just means that in the eyes of the publisher, they don’t see the bottom line with your project---huge profits.

I don’t need to sell a million copies of my book and earn only 8 to 12%. That is what the industry will pay you for your work. That’s right, they keep 88 to 92% of the gross profit of booksales.
